Pierce County Hearing Examiner
Grants Amendment to Miles Land Use Permit

                                                                                                             Editorial

One more time Pierce County fails to respond to the will of the people in another creditable effort
by citizens and friends of this valley to preserve it's rural way of life.  While the Hearing Examiner
went to lengths to hear and note the many accurate arguments against granting this amendment,
no response was made to any of the issues presented.  Perhaps the County feels that allowing
citizens to be heard is creditable governing and it is, however, to be heard and ignored is increditable.
The Alderton/McMillin Community Plan was ignored after many community members volunteered
three years of their life to develop it.

Miles Sand and Gravel has been granted modifications to their Conditional Use Permit:

1.  Expand their Operating Pit hours to 14 hours Monday-Friday, 6:00am to 8:00pm
and to 12 hours Saturdays, 6:00am to 6:00pm.

2.  During peak demand periods, the operating hours may be extended to 9:00pm Monday-Friday
with prior written consent of the Planning Department

3.  That's a possible 700 truck trips per day Monday-Friday adn 20 trips per hour Saturdays.

4.  Be allowed to travel north from the pit on McCutchen Road East to Rhoades Lake Road
for local sand and gravel deliveries.

5.  Increase their mining operations to include 69 acres of Weyerhaeuser property on the
bluff south of the Fish Hatchery that will include logging the trees, removing sand and
gravel and transporting it via a conveyor belt over land, the Tacoma Water Pipe Lines and
Canyon Falls Creek to the current pit.
